Film studies. Designing a great UX. And sunshine filled BBQs. What makes Rio J. tick? Read on to find out.
You are an E-Learning Specialist at the NNSA. What are your core responsibilities in this role?
Currently my program is in the beginning stages of standing up a new learning management system and I am responsible for configuring the system and outlining the processes our program will follow. In addition, I work with our various work centers and stakeholders to identify training needs, develop the training content and plan how we will evaluate the effectiveness of our training program.
What is the most important aspect of the user experience when it comes to designing online learning platforms?
I believe the most important aspects when it comes to using an online learning platform would be if the system is user-friendly, and if the training content is engaging. Since our audience is first responders with full-time careers, we want to minimize any learning curve there might be for users to navigate the system itself, as well as making sure that our curriculum is interactive and keeps learners interested.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
It gives me a sense of pride knowing that I can create technical solutions with immediate impacts to our learners. I also enjoy being able to pour my creativity into designing visually pleasing, unique learning materials.
You earned your BA in film studies. What inspired you to pursue that degree and what are your top three movies of all time?
To be honest, my university did not have a digital storytelling, or visual design degree at that time, so I chose film to get as close to those skills as possible. I do enjoy watching films, and I loved the classes and skills I learned in that major.
As for my favorite movies, I would say City of God, Apocalypto, and Memoirs of a Geisha. I love filmography that overloads my senses, as well as historical timepieces because I feel like I get a glimpse of real people’s stories and can experience a different world. I’m willing to overlook inaccuracies in movies for the sake of emotion and entertainment.
It’s Saturday. The weather is nice and its early summer. What would be a perfect way to enjoy this day and evening?
I am a bit of a homebody, but I love being in my backyard. I think a simple barbeque with my husband while we watch our daughter play would be a perfect Saturday. Watering my rose bushes and lavender while the sun begins to set would put a cherry on top of a great day.
