MELE Associates, Inc - Construction

MELE’s experience in construction management goes back to its roots as an Architecture and Engineering firm based on the background of the P.E.s who comprise the senior management of the company today.  During the past ten years, MELE Associates has provided construction management services, using the military engineering and construction management experience of MELE staff and management.

The MELE Associates CEO is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Hawaii with extensive construction management experience including service as Construction Manager and Deputy Director for the Office of New Production Reactors for the Department of Energy, and service as the first Reserve Admiral in the history of Naval Construction Force to command an Active Brigade, the 2nd Naval Construction Brigade (8,000 people), in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet during Desert Storm.

The MELE Vice President for Construction Management, operating out of our Honolulu office, has extensive experience in construction management including airport construction; from 1988 to 1992 on a runway and taxi-way expansion project and passenger terminal improvements at Keahole Airport as well as terminal improvements at Hilo International Airport. This project was the first of the 5-year phases for the approved Master Plan.  During the Vietnamese War (1966-67), he was the Officer-in-charge-of-Construction at Chu Lai managing construction of a 10,000’ reinforced concrete runway and taxi-ways, pre-engineered metal hangars and storage buildings.

From disaster-response construction of Pentagon SCIFs (Secure Compartmentalized Information Facilities) to Network Operations Centers (NOCs) or remote island research stations, MELE Associates has a successful history of construction management in both secure and non-secure settings. Our construction management experience spans the globe from Hawaii and Guam to Africa and Lithuania. The MELE Team employs a seamless business approach to ensure all participants are working to exceed requirements, communicating clearly and responding to changing needs. Our experience includes coordinating the participants on a construction project, and coordinating various governing bodies and other stakeholders to ensure expectation are clear and met in a timely manner.

A recent project on Cooper Island, in the Pacific required construction of an oceanographic research station including: 14 structures (120 sq ft) for 35 beds, 7 larger structures (240 sq ft) including lab facilities, kitchen, dining and laundry facilities while also providing fresh water and waste water facilities, power generation and air conditioning systems for the lab. MELE managed freight logistics and construction for the project which included only 1 barge delivery, 1 work boat delivery and 5 air deliveries during a 4-month construction period.  MELE completed the project within four months within budget, under extreme logistical situations and environmental conditions.
